Top Tips for Planting Spring Bulbs
1. Choose the right spot
Most Spring bulbs thrive in well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine, although some varieties are happy in partial shade.
2. Plant at the right depth
As a general rule, plant bulbs around 2-3 times their own depth, with the pointed end upwards.
3. Give them room to grow
Avoid planting bulbs too closely together. Allow enough space for them to develop and multiply naturally.
4. Improve heavy soil
If your soil is prone to become waterlogged over the Winter, add plenty of organic matter or grit to improve drainage.
5. Plant in layers
For containers, try the ‘lasagne’ method by planting different bulbs at different depths for a succession of Spring colour.
6. Don’t worry about planting too early
Many Spring bulbs can be planted from early Autumn onwards. Tulips are often best planted a little later, once the soil has cooled.
7. Water after planting
Give newly planted bulbs a good drink, then allow natural rainfall to do the rest, unless conditions remain particularly dry.
8. Plant more than you think!
Spring bulbs look particularly impressive when planted in generous groups and drifts for a natural, colourful display.
Plant your Spring bulbs from Millbrook Garden Centre this Autumn and look forward to a garden bursting into colour when Spring arrives.
